Little League World Series: Friday’s updates, highlights and more

The 2024 Little League World Series is underway with thrilling games on Friday and will culminate on Sunday, August 25, with the crowning of a new champion. This champion will be the one who has proven their mettle among the best young athletes, earning the prestigious LLWS trophy.
Day 3 of this year’s Little League World Series (LLWS) wasn’t as exciting as prior days with top-notch pitching taking center stage. Three of the four games were shutouts: Venezuela won 10-0 over Mexico, Hawaii beat Illinois 5-0, and Chinese Taipei won 11-0 over Australia.
The lone non-shutout was still a convincing win with Florida taking a 6-1 win over Washington. Here are some of the highlights from Friday’s action in Pennsylvania:

Today’s finale won’t be another shutout. William Hemenway II scored on an error to make 3-1 with two outs in the bottom of the third.
Another run extends the lead before Washington takes to the plate.
Florida’s Hunter Alexander hit a slow-rolling infield single to score Lathan Norton and makes it a 2-0 game with one out in the top of the third.
The Northwest Region champions couldn’t get on the board in the second inning. Florida keeps a 1-0 lead entering the third.
A sacrifice fly plated a runner for the Southeast Region champions to give them a 1-0 lead midway through the second inning.
Another pitching duel could be in the works for the final game of the day as the first inning ends 0-0.
Florida beat South Dakota 2-1 on Wednesday to set up a game against Washington.
Chinese Taipei made it three shutouts in three games today from South Williamsburg with an 11-0 win over Australia.
Australia finally connected with a hit against Chinese Taipei but failed to capitalize on the opportunity. They remain scoreless heading into the fifth.
Chinese Taipei extends its lead to 8-0 after scoring two runs in the third inning. Australia is up to bat at the bottom of the third.
Australia seems to be in a groove and prevents Chinese Taipei from adding any runs to the scoreboard. Australia is up to bat at the bottom of the second.
Australia failed to respond to Chinese Taipei’s strong first-inning performance and remains scoreless as Chinese Taipei takes the bat at the top of the second.
Chinese Taipei continues their momentum and adds five more runs to take a 6-0 lead over Australia. Australia is up to bat in the bottom of the first.
Chinese Taipei comes out strong, scoring first to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Tavares’ strong performance from the mound powered a 5-0 victory over Illinois. Hawaii becomes the first United States team to win two games following their victory over New England on Wednesday.
Tavares is still dealing from the mound as Hawaii leads 4-0 through the fourth inning.

Hawaii heads to the plate first in their second game of the tournament following a 3-1 win over New England on Wednesday. Illinois is making its debut today.
Three batters were quickly retired as Venezuela sealed a 10-0 win over Mexico. They’ve now won eight consecutive games dating back to the start of their regional run.
Mexico notched a third out before Venezuela could score again. But now they have to score at least one run in the bottom of the fourth to keep from a mercy rule loss.
A double play notched two outs but Venezuela’s Santiago Bello still scored to make it 10-0 and make the mercy rule possible. Venezuela has a runner on third and, if he scores, the pressure is on Mexico to close the margin in order to keep the game going.
After three innings, Mexico is yet to get on the board. If Venezuela scores one run and Mexico remains scoreless in the fourth, the Little League World Series 10-run mercy rule mandates Mexico must concede the game.
Multiple pitching changes haven’t made a difference for Mexico in the third inning as Veneuzela’s extended the lead to 9-0.

All 39 games of the Little League World Series will be broadcast on ESPN, ESPN2, or ABC, with streaming options including ESPN+, the ESPN app, and fuboTV. Coverage begins at 1 p.m. ET.
The LLWS championship game is slated for Sunday, Aug. 25, at 3 p.m. ET. The third-place consolation game will take place the same day at 10 a.m. ET.

The Little League World Series is split into two brackets: the United States bracket and the international bracket. Each bracket will play out their own individual tournaments, with the winner from each bracket facing each other in the championship.
The U.S. and international brackets are double-elimination brackets, meaning a team must lose twice before it is eliminated from the tournament.

Results date back to 2010 LLWS.
